The Job Bid & Estimate Calculator builds a contractor’s bid from the ground up — materials with waste factor, labor with burden, overhead allocation, and target margin — so the final price protects profit instead of guessing at a markup.
How is it calculated?
Enter material costs with a waste percentage, labor hours and loaded hourly cost, an overhead allocation, and your target profit margin. The calculator applies margin-on-price math (not simple markup) to produce a bid price that actually delivers the margin you set.
Worked example: what should you bid on a $3,000-materials job?
- Add up your direct costs
Materials $3,000 + equipment/rental $200 = $3,200 before labor. These are the hard costs you’ll pay out of pocket on this specific job.
- Cost out the labor
20 labor hours × $45 burdened rate = $900. Use your loaded rate (wage + taxes + insurance), not the raw hourly wage, or you’ll under-bid.
- Layer in overhead
Direct cost = $3,000 + $900 + $200 = $4,100. Apply 15% overhead: $4,100 × 0.15 = $615. Total cost = $4,100 + $615 = $4,715.
- Mark up to hit your margin
Bid = total cost ÷ (1 − margin). $4,715 ÷ (1 − 0.20) = $4,715 ÷ 0.80 = $5,894. Note you divide by 0.80 — you do NOT just add 20%.
- Check the profit
Profit = $5,894 − $4,715 = $1,179, which is exactly 20% of the bid. If you’d instead added 20% to cost ($5,658), your real margin would only be 16.7%.
- Verdict
Bid $5,894 on this job. Anything under $4,715 loses money once overhead is counted; $5,000–$5,500 quietly eats into the 20% you’re trying to protect.

Total the direct costs — materials plus waste, labor at fully burdened rates, equipment, subs, permits — add an overhead share, then divide by (1 − target margin) to get the bid price. Dividing rather than multiplying is the difference between margin and markup, and it’s where most underpricing starts.
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is a percentage added to cost; margin is profit as a share of the sale price. A 20% markup on $10,000 of cost gives a $12,000 bid but only 16.7% margin. To earn a true 20% margin you must divide cost by 0.8 — a $12,500 bid. The gap widens as percentages grow.
What profit margin should a contractor target?
Most trades target 15–25% net margin after real overhead; specialty and emergency work can command more. Below 10% one bad job erases a good month. If your winning bids only pencil at thin margins, the estimate is missing burden or overhead — not priced too high.
How much waste factor should I add to materials?
Typical waste runs 5–15% depending on the material: around 10% for lumber and drywall, 10–15% for tile and flooring with pattern matching, 5% for fixtures. Bidding materials at takeoff quantity with no waste factor quietly eats margin on every job.
